Toolbox

The tools we use and recommend, with the real gotcha we hit along the way and a link to the official docs.

Which tools are worth an hour of your week, and where do they bite? Here you get a straight answer about the tools we rely on, written for owners and marketers who would rather not learn the hard way. Our aim is for every entry here to say why we use a tool and to name the trap that tends to catch people the first time. Expect working notes, not product roundups.

Two posts are good places to begin. One asks whether Bing Webmaster Tools is worth setting up, explains why a second index is worth the bother, and walks through importing your site from Search Console, opening the few reports that matter, and pairing it with IndexNow for pages you change. The other is a quarterly spot check: ask ChatGPT and other assistants the same customer questions each quarter, record who gets named, map each gap to one change, and read the results next to Search Console. That post explains why a repeated spot check beats a tracking system.

Both are routines rather than purchases. You can begin either one without a paid subscription, so the real cost is attention, and the posts lay the steps out in order so that attention goes where it counts. The Bing post also includes a table that matches common questions to the report that answers them in each tool. More tools will join them as we write them up.

Pick one routine this month and put it on the calendar, where it is harder to skip. If you also want your business listing set up properly, our Google Business Profile page covers the listing work we do for service businesses.
